Cargo Bike Toy
Bachelor Graduation Assignment - 2024
During the graduation period of the bachelor in Industrial Design Engineering I executed an individual project within three months. This research, executed for LOEF Toys based in Rotterdam, focused on the development of an educational toy which can be installed inside a cargo bike. Because of the confidentiality of this assignment, I am not allowed to share details. Therefore, this page will only explain the overall process.
The assignment started with a literature research, complemented with interviews, observations and measurements. This phase was focused on understanding the target group – children between 3 and 6 years of age – and their developmental skills; the identity, needs and wishes of LOEF Toys; the specific cargo bike in which the toy should be installed; and the toys which are currently on the market. Next to this, in depth research was conducted on the method of Maria Montessori and on how this method can be translated into a toy. This knowledge has been used to design an educational toy.
After the analysis phase the design phase started. After three iteration rounds a variety of concepts has been created. From these concepts, a final design originated. This was further detailed in the next phase, as choices – such as materials and final dimensions – still needed to be made.
The final design has been translated into a prototype. This gave the opportunity to test the design with the intended target group. The prototype was tested with several toddlers and preschoolers while doing school visits. With this information I was able to evaluate the design and answer the research question of the thesis. Next to this, it provided points of improvement. On these points the design could be improved if it will be taken into production in the future.
